The distress transmission relays the GPS EPIRB (GPIRB) position, accurate to within 100 meters. Also transmits a 121.5 MHz homing signal to aid rescuers in finding the device. Return Link Service (RLS) confirms that the beacon has successfully sent the distress message and that this message has been received. Near Field Communication (NFC) allows the beacon to connect to a smartphone for quick diagnostics that demonstrate the battery is charged and the EPIRB is functioning properly.
